What are the differences between the 2019 and 2020 Explorers?
The 2020 Explorer, built in the Chicago Assembly Plant, has been completely redesigned—inside, outside and under the hood. Thanks to a 200 pound curb weight reduction and improved weight distribution, this new sixth generation’s model accelerates more quickly and drives more smoothly than before. But the Explorer still retains all the qualities that people have come to love about it, such as a practical and roomy family friendly interior and good performance.
Here are a few differences between the 2019 and 2020 Explorers:
The 2020 Explorer returns to its roots of rear-wheel drive, while the 2019 model is front wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles handle better in curves, turns and navigating through traffic. RWD is also better for towing, and the 2020 Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds. All-wheel drive is an option for both models.
There are two new available trims for 2020: a commanding, no-compromise Explorer Limited Hybrid and the most powerful Explorer to date, the Explorer ST. The ST has an athletic look matched by 400 horsepower, 415 lb.-ft. of torque and a top speed of 143 mph. The Limited Hybrid is fully off-road capable and the only hybrid in its class that can tow 5,000 pounds. It also offers 318 horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of over 500 miles.
Aside from the Hybrid, every 2020 Explorer is turbocharged, while one of three 2019 Explorer engines is turbocharged. All 2020 engines are paired with a 10-speed transmission for enhanced acceleration and smoother shifting. The new and improved family of engines has better fuel economy and performance.
Standard on the 2020 Explorer is Ford Co-Pilot360, the most advanced suite of standard driver-assist technologies, to make the 2020 Explorer an IIHS Top Safety Pick. This includes auto high-beam headlamps, rear view camera, lane-keeping system, blind spot information system and automatic emergency braking.
In 2020, the second-row captain’s chairs have become standard, as well as comfortable cloth upholstery seating, tri-zone electronic temperature and an 8-in screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and you can upgrade to a vertically-oriented 10.1-in screen. Every 2020 Explorer features remote start and a power liftgate to make loading in and out a breeze.
